Rather, that goal belongs to death itself – Thanos cares nothing for the prosperity of the living, only wiping out half of all life to prove his devotion to death. But in the comics, Thanos is not driven by a desire to bring balance to the universe. And of course, he’s eventually defeated by an alliance of heroes who return the universe to normal, just like in endgame. In the The Infinity GauntletThanos manages to complete the titular artifact and wipe out half of all life in the universe with a snap of his fingers, just like he does in Infinite War.
The most notable example of this is the 1991 crossover miniseries The Infinity Gauntletthe plot that inspired much of the story for Infinite War and endgame. To prove his devotion to death, Thanos is determined to end all life in the universe as a sacrifice for his beloved. More specifically, Thanos is obsessed with winning the affections of Mistress Death, the metaphysical embodiment of Death itself in the Marvel Comics Multiverse.
